How to choose your stimulation type

A guide on choosing your preferred type of bilateral stimulation.

Before you begin your EMDR reset session, you’ll be asked to choose your preferred type of bilateral stimulation. This simply means gentle, rhythmic signals that guide your eye from left to right - helping your brain process thoughts in a more balanced way. You’ll have two options to choose from. Both are equally effective, so it’s really about what feels more comfortable for you today.

Option 1: Audio Beeps

With this option, you’ll hear soft beeps. You will move your eyes left and right in time with the beeps. You can keep your eyes open or closed - whichever feels better. Some people like this method because it doesn’t require looking at the screen, which can feel more relaxing or less distracting.

Try this if you:
  • Prefer keeping your eyes closed.
  • Find visual focus tiring or distracting.
  • Like using sound to stay grounded.

Option 2: Moving Light

This option uses a small light that travels back and forth across your screen. Your job is simply to track it with your eyes - left to right, gently and steadily. It gives your mind something visual to focus on, which can help some people stay present and alert.

Try this if you:
  • Are more visually oriented.
  • Find that watching something helps you stay focused.
  • Prefer to keep your eyes open and engaged.

Not Sure Which to Pick?

Don’t worry - there’s no wrong choice. You might want to try the one that feels easier or less distracting in the moment. If you can’t decide:
  • Try one for this session and switch to the other next time.
  • Choose the one that feels the most calming.
  • If you're feeling a bit anxious, some people find audio beeps easier to settle into.

You’ll be able to choose a different type before each session, but not during - so take a moment now to see which one feels right.

Quick Reminder

  • There’s no ‘better’ option - it’s about what works best for you
  • You’re allowed to change your mind between sessions
  • If one method feels uncomfortable, just try the other next time

Whichever you choose, what matters most is that you feel safe, steady, and ready to begin.
